The Most Important Issues Concerning the Interests of Ukraine and the EU and NATO

The main factor affecting Ukraine's interests in the context of its European and Euro-Atlantic integration is further exacerbation of relations between Russia and the West, which is becoming critical after the US and its allies' a missile strike on Syria. At this we cannot rule out the possibility of an armed conflict between Russia and the United States and NATO involving Ukraine as well as the intensification of Moscow's armed aggression against our state as a “symmetrical answer” to Washington over its actions against B. Assad's regime.

Taking into consideration the above-mentioned circumstances, important for Ukraine is the consistent support to its positions by Western countries and international organizations. In particular, such support was demonstrated by the Federal Chancellor of Germany A. Merkel during her meeting with Ukrainian President P. Poroshenko on April 10, 2018 in Berlin. During the talks, A. Merkel expressed the FRG's intention to continue cooperation with Ukraine and bring it to a qualitatively new level.

In this regard, the head of the German government focused on two main issues, namely, the need to implement Ukraine's initiative on the deployment of UN peacekeeping forces throughout the conflict zone in the Donbas, and continuing the transit of gas through Ukrainian territory, even in case of the implementation of the Russian project “Nord Stream 2”. It is on this that the efforts of the Federal Republic of Germany will focused. According to A. Merkel, she touched upon the above-mentioned issues during her telephone conversations with V. Putin on the eve of her meeting with the President of Ukraine.

A similar position was also expressed by British Prime Minister T. May during her telephone conversation with P. Poroshenko on April 11, 2018. In particular, she confirmed solidarity with Ukraine in its confrontation with Russia, and also condemned the Putin regime's annexation of the Crimea and provoking a conflict in the Donbas. Besides, they discussed issues of strengthening sanctions against Russia and deepening cooperation between the UK and Ukraine in the security and defence spheres. Thus, in the near future, London is going to take measures of a financial nature against Russian oligarchs who have hidden assets in the UK.

At the same time, representatives of the United States and NATO express confidence in the reality of the prospects for Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine. Thus, on the statement of the Permanent Representative of the United States to NATO, Kay Bailey Hutchison during the Kiev Security Forum on April 12, Ukraine is already moving towards membership in the Alliance, as it is implementing its Annual National Programmes. However, she acknowledged the complexity of this path, both because of the need for domestic reforms in Ukraine, and as a result of Moscow's counteracting our rapprochement with the Alliance. Based on this, the United States will continue to assist Ukraine in implementing its civilization choice.

As part of such assistance, the USA will increase the supply of energy resources to Europe at reduced prices. Due to this, the EU and Ukraine's energy dependence on Russian gas will decrease. At the same time, a strong competition will be created for the Russian project “Nord Stream 2”.

Deputy Secretary General of NATO Rose Gottemoeller also expressed support for Ukraine's aspiration to join the Alliance. In her opinion, Ukraine's goal of integrating into NATO and the EU is “not idealistic, but realistic”. But at this she also recognized the existence of significant problems in Ukraine's implementation of its plans.

Other Aspects of Cooperation Between Ukraine and Its Western Partners

Political support of Ukraine by its western partners is also supported by the promotion of Ukrainian business in the European market. In April 2018, Belgian The Brussels Times launched the international media project “UA-100: Ukrainian Business for Europe”, which involves promoting Ukrainian economic interests in Europe.

The main idea of the project is to spread information about Ukrainian business and demonstrate its scope and capabilities. Due to this, it is planned to solve the problem of low awareness of European consumers about Ukrainian companies and their products. The Brussels Times is widely featured in the European media space and has a high reputation in the EU.

Some Events and Factors Influencing Ukraine's Relations with Western Countries and International Organizations

The leadership of the Russian Federation keeps trying to prove the international recognition of the Crimea's “belonging to Russia” by organizing all sorts of events involving representatives of marginal, euroskeptic, nationalist and pro-Russian political forces of European countries. One of such events is the Yalta Economic Forum, which is held annually since 2015. In particular, the Crimean occupying authorities have invited MPs of the German Bundestag (Federal Parliament) from the “Alternative for Germany” party, as well as a number of Austrian politicians, to participate in this forum this year (April 19–21).
