The “Gordian Knot” of the Middle East

Vadym Volokhov

Today, we are witnessing the deterioration of the situation in the Middle East and it has a steady trend to further escalation. Relations between NATO, Turkey and the USA have become sharper. The reason is not so much the Iranian nuclear program, but the new White House's policy in the Middle East, in particular in Syria, the US President's decision to relocate the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and the formation of a new anti-Iranian coalition headed by the United States and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. After the USA's unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) and the resumption of sanctions, the situation around Iran and its nuclear program has got even more strained.

But not all European and Middle Eastern countries have followed the United States. France, Germany, the United Kingdom, as well as Russia and China have expressed their disagreement with Washington's policy and their intentions to preserve the “nuclear deal” and work out adequate means to protect their interests from American sanctions.
