Malaysia: The First Obstacle on the Chinese “Belt and Road”

Roman Kot

China's expansion within the framework of “The Belt and Road” initiative for the first time has seriously faltered. Last week, July 4, Malaysia froze three Chinese projects in its territory.

Official Beijing has not yet responded to Kuala Lumpur's demarche. From an economic point of view, freezing projects is not too painful for the PRC. More important is the first blow to China's image. Since launching “The Belt and Road” initiative, none of the Chinese partners have dared to act so bluntly against the interests of the Celestial Empire. The lack of a rigorous reaction in the situation where China is positioning itself as one of the two world leaders will lead to losing face, which is even more important.
