Latin America. Analytical Review 12/2018

The Political and Economic Situation in December 2018

The last month of 2018 for many countries in Latin America was marked by changes of their presidents. Cuba is actively discussing amendments to its Constitution, a new government is being formed in Brazil, Venezuela is seeking the Russian and Turkish Presidents' support for its regime. The next 2019 will be the year of reelection of presidents in Argentina, Bolivia, Panama, Uruguay, Guatemala. It can be argued that with D. Trump's coming to power, the United States returns to itself the opportunity to influence the countries of Latin America. Burning is the issue of stopping the illegal crossing of US borders by refugees from Central America. The “Marshall Plan” proposed by the President of Mexico raises more questions than answers. As a surprise came President of Turkey R. Erdogan's support to the N. Maduro regime (for the first time in the history of the two countries R. Erdogan paid an official visit to the Latin American country [of course, pursuing his own goals]). And Russia, showing military muscles, drew the world's attention to the transatlantic flight of its aircrafts and made it remember the history lessons associated with the Caribbean crisis.

Everything new is well forgotten old, isn't it?
