I. Major Events and Trends in the Development of the Situation In and Around China

One of the most important events in the PRC this week is the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on June 9–10 in Qingdao (Shandong Province, Eastern China). The summit will be chaired by China's President, Secretary General of the Communist Party of China, Xi Jinping. The SCO forum in Qingdao will be the first meeting in this format after India and Pakistan' joining the Organization.

May 28, 2018, a special briefing on the SCO summit was held in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China. According to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, since its creation, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has entered a new level as one of the most powerful and influential international structures. In this regard, Wang Yi focused on China's role as the residing country in the SCO after the Organization's summit in June 2017 in Astana. As pointed out by the Chinese Foreign Minister, the year of the Beijing's presidency in the SCO was the starting point for the development of the “Shanghai Spirit”, the disclosure of the Organization's potential after the accession of new members, and creation of stable conditions for its successful development. This actually confirmed China's leadership in the SCO, to which Russia claims.
