I. Major Events and Trends in the Development of the Situation In and Around China
This autumn marks the 5th anniversary of China's proclamation of the strategic initiative “The Belt and Road”. The importance of its successful implementation for the PRC and the world in general was confirmed during a special summit seminar on August 27, 2018 in Beijing.
The event was attended by China's President Xi Jinping, who called on Chinese partners to deepen their cooperation within the framework of the “Belt and Road”, which would have a mutual benefit for all peoples. According to the Chinese leader, the initiative is a Chinese contribution to the process of expanding global openness and cooperation, improving the system of world economic management, as well as joint development and prosperity.
At the same time, Xi Jinping emphasized the results of the “Belt and Road”'s work for the past five years. According to him, during the mentioned period, China's trade with the countries-participants of the initiative has reached more than 5 trillion US dollars, and Chinese investments in these countries have exceeded 60 billion US dollars, which allowed to create about 200 thousand new jobs.

At the same time, the PRC President rejected the statements of some politicians regarding Beijing's using the “Belt and Road” to build its sphere of influence in the world. In this regard, he defined the essence of the Chinese initiative as one of the forms of voluntary cooperation of interested countries in the economic sphere, not a geopolitical alliance or military league.
